The tradition of an afternoon tea in England was started by the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna in the year 1840. She would get hungry around 4:00 P.M. as dinner in her house will not be served until 8:00. The gap between lunch and dinner time resulted to her usual complains of “having that sinking feeling” late in the afternoon.
I can totally relate. I sometimes feel that my stomach has receded (not exaggerating) after 2-3 hours of not digesting anything. In the Philippines, we call it “merienda” or afternoon snack which has a great influence from the Spaniards.
We all know that afternoon tea is a big deal in Great Britain. As the saying goes, when in Britain do what the British do.
However, we do not want our afternoon tea to be just a must do or try when in London. Instead, we want it to be fancy, an experience with a bit of extravagance and style.
We all agreed there is no other perfect place more iconic than The Ritz Hotel to schedule our afternoon tea hosted by The Palm Court.
For 1 hour and 45 minutes we were served with sandwiches, pastries, scones and of course tea to our hearts content. Everything was delicious and delightful! We paid for the package that includes a glass of champagne.
There is a dress code which I don’t mind because it’s been a while since I dolled up.
The service was impeccable and the staff were friendly. After our tea, we stayed for a while and surveyed some areas at the hotel. Like the pink powder room and look how posh that elevator is!
My heart beats fast upon seeing the grand staircase. We must have a photo taken at the staircase.
If you ask me if the experience is worth paying 68 GBP? Well, I will never look at the afternoon tea the same way again.
